Tiwa Savage

Tiwatope Savage Balogun popularly known as (Tiwa Savage) is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, performer and actress born on 5th February 1980 in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. Her family relocated to London when she was 11 year old. While attending high school, she was a trombone player for her school’s Orchestra band.

Savage had a healthy upbringing; she grew up in a multicultural setting due to her migration from Nigeria to the United Kingdom, and from the United Kingdom to the United State, after graduating with a degree in business administration from the University of Kent. She started working at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Savage did backup vocals for George Michael when she was 16, and lent vocal to other musicians such as Mary J blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, and Ms Dynamite among others. She also performed on stage with 50 cent, and the black eyed peas, Eminem, Robbie Williams and Destiny’s Child.

She enrolled at Berklee College of music and graduated with a degree in professional music at the age of 27. While talking about her experiences there, she said she needed the school atmosphere, and spoke on the challenges musicians face during their transition from backup to lead, and said that artists face more scrutiny when their performances are mediocre. Her business background has helped her fully understand the scope of the Nigerian music industry.

In 2006 she participated in the UK edition of the X factor and advanced to the final 24. In 2009, Sony/ATV music publishing signed savage to a music deal which solidified her to write for baby face, Kat Deluna, Fantasia Barrino, Monica and Mija.

She has received songwriting credit for her contribution to Monica’s soul - tinged balled “catch me” also her contribution with fantasia on the song “Collard greens and Combread” earned the American recording artist a Grammy nomination in 2010.

She writes Jaicko’s “Push push” featuring Akon and David Guetta. In as much as she likes writing for others artist, she finds writing for herself more rewarding. She performed background vocal on Whitney Houston’s album “I look to you” in 2009.

In December 2011, she Co-hosted the second season of Nigerian Idol alongside IllRymz. Savage made her first film appearance with Joke Silva and Ireti doyle in the stage adaptation of “For coloured girls”. She became the first African Female artist to be associated with the PEPSI brand after singing an endorsement deal with the brand.

In 2012 she signed a record contract with Don Jazzy “Mavin Record” the superstar also signed a management and publishing deal with ROC Nation in June 2016.

She was featured on solar plexus, a Compilation album released by Mavin Record. Her debut studio album “Once Upon a Time” was released on 3 July 2013, it was supported by the single “Kele Kele Love”, “Love Me (3x)”, “Without my Heart”, “Ife wa Gbona”, “Folarin”, “Olorun Mi” and “Emindo”.

Savage second studio album “Red”, was released on 19th December 2015. It produced the singles “My Darlin”, “African waist” and “If I start to talk”.

She later establishes her own label imprint, 323 Entertainment, with her husband Tunji Tee Billz Balogun. She joined Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records in 2012 after the label she co-owns teamed up with the executive producer.

Savage was featured on Flavour N’ abania’s “Oyi Remix in 2012. Prior to Collaboration with flavor she recorded her own version of the song. In November 2012 she collaborated with Waje, Praiz, Timi Dakolo and Pamela Egah on the Ovation Red carol theme “Higer”

On 3rd july 2013, she released her long - awaited debut album, “Once Upon a Time”to the Nigerian public.

On July 2013, savage signed an endorsement deal with MTN Nigeria reportedly worth ₦30 Million. She also signed endorsement deal with PEPSI, Forte Oil and Maggi.

On 1 may 2014, Mavin Records released “Dorobucci” featuring savage, Don Jazzy, and the rest of the crew, making it the label’s first collaboration release since the release of the Solar Plexus album in 2012.

She performed at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards alongside Miguel, Flavour N’ abania, Davido, Mafikizolo, Uhuru, Oskido.

in July 2017 Savage signed a multi- Million Naira Endorsement deal with Profectiv Mega Growth.

Tiwa Savage is married to Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun on 23 November 2013, the traditional marriage was held in lekki, Lagos. While the white wedding at Armani Hotel Dubai. On 28 april 2016, she gave birth to her son Jamil Balogun.

On 28 April 2016, Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun in a series of social media posts accused his wife of infidelity as well as her mother of witchcraft.

In an interview on Thisday newspaper she extensively addressed her husband’s lengthy social media posts. she debunked her husband’s infidelity claims and accused him of financial recklessness, drug addiction, and abandonment.
